ABOUT VENETAIN PLASTER

In the 1400’s AD, during the Renaissance, there was a new effort to design and build based on Roman Architecture, and in this period re-began the use of smooth finished walls with mineral colors integrated in the lime, to create the undulated colour effect commonly associated with Venetian Plaster. By the 1500s, Andrea Palladio had brought the use of Marmorino to its maximum exposure collaborating with Alessandro Vittoria as a master plaster to reproduce the tecnologies that had originated by the Romans during the initial centuries of their empire.

There is very little historical difference between Marmorino and Grassello di Calce, except that Grassello di Calce or Venetian Plaster does not contain the fine marble agregate which permits this product to gloss using a spatula trowel. Venetian plaster is not an ideal product for outdoor use because as a finish is has a tendacy to whiten over the years when exposed to the elements without the use of consolidators to protect the finish.

Grassello di Calce, (Venetian Plaster) requires at least 3 trowel coats with a certain amount of spatula work in the 2nd and 3rd coats. Historically as many as 7 coats can be applied in Venetian Plaster to create depth with the uses of different tints of plaster as well as spatula techniques. There is no limit to the amount of coats a professional can apply.

Marmorino will never create the luster or polished shine as is inherent with Grassello di Calce when burnishing with a trowel. Venetian Plasters can be waxed to achieve a very high shine.
